HOOK Announces Official Retirement of FTW Title – The FTW Championship has officially been retired following a significant moment at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam. In a match where HOOK faced off against Roderick Strong, HOOK successfully defended his title.
After the match, during an interview with Tony Schiavone, HOOK expressed his gratitude to the fans and all the wrestlers who have held the championship, before announcing the retirement of the FTW title. In a heartfelt gesture, he handed the championship belt to his father, Taz, who serves as an AEW commentator, and the two shared a warm embrace.
The FTW Championship was originally introduced by ECW in 1998, created by Taz himself during his tenure with the promotion. The title made its way to AEW when Taz joined the company, at which point he decided to reinstate it after Jon Moxley missed a scheduled world title match due to COVID-19 exposure.
At the time of its retirement, HOOK was in his third reign as FTW Champion, having captured the title from Chris Jericho at AEW All In. Throughout its history in AEW, the FTW Championship has been held by notable wrestlers such as Brian Cage, Ricky Starks, Jack Perry, and Chris Jericho. The retirement of this title marks the end of an era, honoring its legacy in both ECW and AEW.
