Backstage Update on Darby Allin’s Role in World Title Picture – Bryan Danielson has had the wrestling world talking since becoming AEW World Heavyweight Champion. This is because of his big win over Swerve Strickland in a career vs. title match that headlined the AEW All In London 2024 pay-per-view event from Wembley Stadium and what happened at All Out.
Jon Moxley attacked him after retaining the title over Jack Perry and put a plastic bag over his head. Darby Allin had previously earned a title shot against Danielson at the Grand Slam event on September 25.
That has changed as Danielson will wrestle Nigel McGuinness in a non-title match while Allin will put his title shot on the line against Moxley at Grand Slam. The winner of Moxley vs. Allin will wrestle Danielson for the World Title. Although not confirmed, that future title bout would likely happen at WrestleDream in November.
As Dave Meltzer previously reported, there were serious discussions about putting the title on Allin shortly. While speaking on Wrestling Observer, Meltzer noted that AEW had decided to put the title on Allin at one point.
Meltzer said, “The winner between Moxley and Darby is going to wrestle Danielson for the title in Tacoma [WrestleDream]. Darby was at one point winning that match, and he’s from the area essentially. Seattle. However, the money match right now is very clearly Moxley.”
Meltzer added, “He’ll do other matches. I did see the poster for the [Grand Slam] Australia show [in February]. And, you know, one of the key things in there is this: there is no Danielson [advertised].”
