Backstage News on Buddy Matthews’ New AEW Contract – As noted, AEW has secured the future of another key talent, Buddy Matthews, as part of its ongoing efforts to retain and attract top stars. Matthews, known for his tenure in WWE as Buddy Murphy, has been a prominent figure in AEW since joining the promotion in February 2022. He has aligned himself with Malakai Black and Brody King in the faction House of Black, achieving notable success, including holding the Trios titles.
Before his AEW stint, Matthews made a significant impact in WWE, holding the Raw, NXT Tag Team, and Cruiserweight Championships. Following his departure from WWE in June 2021, he competed in MLW and NJPW, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and talented wrestler.
Recent speculation suggested Matthews might return to WWE, given his relationship with Rhea Ripley. However, it has been confirmed that he has re-signed with AEW. Ibou of WrestlePurists initially broke the news, and further details were provided by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer reported that the new, very lucrative deal was agreed upon months ago after Matthews had previously attempted to give notice. AEW, however, was not releasing any talent to WWE.
Matthews has yet to comment publicly on his new contract status, but his continued presence in AEW ensures that the House of Black remains a formidable force in the promotion.
