Bruce Prichard Discusses Billy Gunn Never Reaching Main Event Status in WWE – In the realm of professional wrestling, Billy Gunn thrived in tag team ventures but faced challenges gaining momentum as a solo performer. Bruce Prichard, on the “Something To Wrestle” podcast, shed light on why Gunn may not have ascended to the main event status.
Prichard admitted to overlooking Gunn’s run as “The One,” highlighting his own lack of recollection. He pondered why Gunn couldn’t propel himself as a singles star despite possessing remarkable physical attributes. “If you look at Billy Gunn, my God he’s a Greek god still to this day! He’s got all the tools and can do anything but for whatever reason, when push comes to shove, it’s just not there.”
Similarly, Prichard reflected on Road Dogg’s trajectory, stating that he, too, excelled as part of a tag team. He suggested that their chemistry and success as a duo might have overshadowed their individual capacities. “I’ll say the same thing about Road Dogg! Dogg was much better as a tag team wrestler and you put those guys together and they made magic together, you take them apart and now part of that illusion is exposed.”
Even Gunn’s “Mr. A–” gimmick faced scrutiny from Prichard, who questioned its effectiveness in connecting with audiences. “We get Billy Gunn, DX, New Age Outlaws — I thought it fit and it was a good character for him, except I don’t even remember The One.”
Despite the challenges in establishing himself as a solo act, Gunn’s contributions were honored when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of D-Generation X. Notably, during his time with AEW, he maintained his legacy despite the hurdles encountered in carving out a successful individual wrestling persona.
