Original Plans for Jon Moxley Nixed Due to Concussion – During last week’s AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam event, Jon Moxley found himself in a challenging situation as he made a quick decision to change the finish of his match against Rey Fenix for the AEW International Title due to suffering a concussion.
The incident occurred when Moxley was rocked after Fenix executed a dive. Referee Rick Knox initiated the count as Fenix covered Moxley, but Moxley held up at two and a half, signaling that the match was not supposed to end at that moment. Fenix proceeded to hit another move, with the referee counting faster to emphasize that the original finish was altered, resulting in Fenix leaving with the title. Fortunately, Moxley is reported to be okay following the incident.
However, the change in the match finish had broader implications, impacting not only the match itself but also causing immediate adjustments to AEW Dynamite and potentially affecting the upcoming WrestleDream event. Original plans had called for a non-AEW wrestler to appear on AEW Dynamite and challenge Moxley for the AEW International Title at WrestleDream. With the match result being altered, the challenge was no longer viable, leaving fans to wonder about the identity of the surprise challenger that was initially planned for the event.
Fightful Select also reports that there is heat on referee Rick Knox for not making the initial count on Moxley once the audible was called. WWE referees usually call matches as a shoot so Knox’s error not only telegraphed the original ending, but forced Fenix to hit an already injured Moxley with another maneuver before getting the pin. It is noted that this isn’t the first time Knox has made a mistake like this.
