Jon Moxley Says His Substance Abuse Issues Are Never Really Over, But They're In The Rearview

Jon Moxley Talks Substance Abuse Issues – Jon Moxley will face Kenny Omega in a buzzworthy Steel Cage match on the May 10 episode of AEW Dynamite. The bout will be the latest addition to a long line of high-profile contests for “The Purveyor of Violence.”

Moxley has been on a renowned run as a member of the Blackpool Combat Club, but it wasn’t long ago when he had to step away from AEW for a chunk of time. He entered an inpatient alcohol treatment program in November 2021, and he didn’t return to AEW until January 2022.

Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Moxley highlighted his history with Omega and noted that the former AEW World Champion has pushed him since his first day in AEW. Moxley noted that he’s better now than he was in 2019, and while substance abuse issues are never truly over, they are in the rearview mirror for him.

“Four years ago, a lot of people were ready to write me off. A lot of people thought I couldn’t even measure up to Kenny. He was coming off that New Japan run and he was the greatest wrestler of all time. I felt an immense amount of motivation. I felt like, ‘I’m going to show all you motherfuckers I belong on the top.’ So Kenny has been pushing me since day one in AEW. Now I’m far better than I was then in 2019, especially now that I’m not scared of dying of a seizure in the ring. Substance abuse issues are never really over, but it’s in the rearview. Mentally, physically, this is the best I’ve felt in a long time,” Moxley said.

Moxley went on to describe how he has a lot of miles on his body, but he pushes himself to get everything he can out of it. He stated that he feels better than ever mentally, and he’ll do whatever he wants.

“Let’s face the facts: I’ve got a lot of miles on my body. You only live once and I don’t take it easy. I’ve pushed myself to get everything I can out of my body. Mentally, I feel better than ever. Right now, never in my life have I given less fucks about anything. I’ll do whatever the fuck I want. I don’t give a fuck. That may sound abstract, but it’s a powerful thing,” Moxley said.
