The History Of WWE SummerSlam And A Preview For 2023’s Event

WWE SummerSlam 2023 begins in just a few months, and every year this PPV event is one of the highlights of the professional wrestling calendar. Every year this huge wrestling extravaganza provides hours of entertainment and drama, and whatever happens in Detroit this summer will echo through the rest of the year’s events. Here are some early predictions for SummerSlam 2023, and some of SummerSlam’s most shocking moments throughout its amazing history in wrestling.

2023: The Return To Michigan

This year the SummerSlam event returns to Michigan for the first time since 1993. The match card is yet to be announced but we can expect all of the biggest stars to step into the ring in Detroit’s Ford Field this August. Tickets go on sale in April, and both the WWE and the Detroit Sports Commission expect a sold-out stadium for the biggest event of the year.

There is some debate on whether people will be placing bets on this year’s SummerSlam. Sports betting online is gaining in popularity, and top-tier sportsbooks like BetUS may begin taking bets on WWE events soon. By the time SummerSlam rolls around again, you could find markets open and odds available on all the biggest wrestling stars. Some of the biggest twists and turns in SummerSlam history will help them work out the odds of what will happen, and to who.

2008: Sent To Hell In A Cell

Turn the clock back to the year 2008 and you will find one of the greatest SummerSlams in the history of wrestling. The event culminated with a Hell in a Cell match between the Undertaker and Edge, with both athletes arguably in their prime. The match lasted nearly half an hour, with a wide selection of tables, ladders, and chairs involved in the epic battle. The Undertaker won, but he was not done. After winning the bout he decided to take Edge up a tall ladder in the middle of the ring and chokeslam him through the mat to finish SummerSlam 2008.

2002: Brock Versus The Rock

The tension had been building up to this match all year, and both of these amazing and talented wrestlers were eager to face one another in the ring and decide who would be the Undisputed Champion. Both were fan favorites, and people were on the edge of their seats across the world as they watched an epic battle between two wrestlers at the peak of their physical fitness. The ‘People’s Elbow’ was lined up and waiting for Brock Lesnar, but he managed a reversal and Lesnar hit The Rock with his signature F-5 to beat The Rock and become the youngest ever Undisputed Champion in WWE history.

2005: The Custody Battle

The storyline that underpins the matchup between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio is a little convoluted and over-the-top even by WWE standards, but the ladder match it generated is possibly the greatest ever. Both Guerrero and Mysterio are at their peak and pushed ladder matches to their extreme with this huge battle. Watch this one back for 20 minutes of pure wrestling excellence and bravery from both men as they do some jaw-dropping slams. This SummerSlam also included John Cena defending his title against Chris Jericho and Batista needing just nine minutes to defend his heavyweight title in a No Holds Barred match, but the Guerrero/Mysterio ladder match is the highlight of the evening.

1997: Stone Cold Earns His Name

The SummerSlam of 1997 is most famous for one of the undercard matches. Stone Cold Steve Austin was in a match with Owen Hart for the Intercontinental Championship. The bout itself is filled with plenty of action, and there is more than just the belt on the line. If Stone Cold loses the match, he has to literally kiss Owen Hart’s ass. This never happened though, as during a piledriver administered to Stone Cold by the legendary wrestler Owen Hart, Stone Cold broke his neck. Close-ups showed just how dire the situation was for Steve Austin, but he continued wrestling and finished the match to beat Hart and claim the title while his neck was broken.

2000: Tables, Ladders, And Chairs, Oh My!

The Dudley Boyz are legends of the sport for a number of reasons, but this match is surely when they secured their spot in the WWE hall of fame. Their long running feud with Edge and Christian culminated in a three-way bout that included the Hardy Boyz. The Dudleys are the titans of tables, the Hardys the legends of ladders, and chairs being the weapons of choice for Edge and Christian, this was the first ever TLC Match. Tables, Ladders, and Chairs? Mr. McMahon, you are spoiling us. Watch this match back to see a tour de force from all sides, with every athlete in the ring an expert in their field.

Anything can happen in this year’s SummerSlam. History shows that the biggest matches happen on the mat at this event, and Detroit is in for a treat. Tune in this year to see an amazing pay-per-view, and get yourself in the mood with some highlights from these epic matches of SummerSlams past.
