Charlotte Flair Talks About Her Extended WWE Absence Last Year

Charlotte Flair Talks About Her Extended WWE Absence Last Year – Charlotte Flair was absent from WWE programming for quite some time, and her comeback gave her something from the WWE Universe she never expected.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair recently sat down with Joseph Staszewski of the New York Post to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about her extended time away from the ring last year following WrestleMania Backlash, Flair revealed that it stemmed from multiple dental procedures she had to undergo following her honeymoon. She had many procedures to go through, including one that would take place after SummerSlam, which forced her to miss WWE’s second biggest show of the year.

On the bright side, it allowed Flair to spend more time with her husband, All Elite Wrestling’s Andrade El Idolo, as the two haven’t had a lot of time to spend together off the road due to their conflicting schedules in recent years.

“I had to,” Charlotte Flair said. “I didn’t have a choice but to take care of these issues. Usually I’m thinking, even if I do go to the beach while I’m working I could go for a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, but I’m thinking, ‘what am I doing on TV Friday, where are my live events?’ To completely be disconnected and in the moment was so nice and getting that one-on-one time with Manny [Andrade] that I never have had before, it was priceless.”

Charlotte Flair recently returned to SmackDown in a surprising moment where she challenged Ronda Rousey and defeated her to win back the championship she lost eight months prior. One thing she didn’t expect, however, was the reaction from the WWE Universe that night.

“I was very overwhelmed,” Charlotte Flair said. “For me to get overwhelmed out there, I’m usually controlling the emotions and the pace and where I’m at. I was just like, I had never had that comeback moment. I never had that feel-good [moment]. Maybe when I won [at] WrestleMania 32, but it wasn’t a surprise. It was a big moment in my career, but no one’s ever missed me. I’m always there. I was so touched, like it really, really changed the direction that I wanted to go when I came back. OK, let the guard down, let the chin down a little bit. What I mean is let people in and try to go where this is going.”

WWE has attempted to slot Flair in the babyface role multiple times over the years, but this is the first time The Queen feels like it’s a natural fit.

“Seeing the reaction still, as it continues. I’m just like, ‘go with it,’” Charlotte Flair said. “Don’t force anything. This is the first time that I genuinely feel right in the good-guy role. I’m not saying how long that will last, but it feels right right now.”
