On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio during the NXT recap, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed Santos Escobar’s status with NXT and Alvarez wondered why he was not on the main roster.
On this week’s NXT show, Escobar felt like an afterthought because his loss to Isaiah “Swerve” Scott was the backdrop for Scott losing the NXT North American Championship to Carmelo Hayes after Hayes cashed in.
Alvarez said, “I’m watching this match and I’m thinking [that] all they want is some Hispanic superstar that can speak English, and Santos Escobar is a great worker, he’s a good looking guy and he can speak English and he’s stuck here.”
Meltzer said, “Yea, that’s what they signed him for and then they obviously…” Alvarez then asked why he is still in NXT because he is literally everything that WWE wanted in a Hispanic superstar. Alvarez said, “I guess he’s not 7 feet tall but he’s not 5’2.”
Meltzer said, “he’s not big and he’s not young.” Escobar is 37 years old.
Escobar recently said that he and Legado Del Fantasma are ready for the main roster and he mentioned a feud with The Bloodline as something he would be interested in. At this point, there are no signs pointing towards WWE moving Escobar or Legado Del Fantasma as a group to the main roster anytime soon.
