Shaquille O’Neal worked his first match in AEW as he teamed up with Jade Cargill to beat Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet in a mixed tag team match on Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite on TNT.
Dave Meltzer noted that the match did 1.113 million viewers, which is the largest average mach number on a head-to-head night with WWE NXT in more than a year.
The match took place in the opening segment. Because Shaq is a well-known NBA Legend, AEW got a lot of mainstream attention from sports radio and early morning talk shows the next day. However, his match nor the spot where he went through a table didn’t make it onto SportsCenter nor did it crack the top 20 Google searches for the day.
Back on the December 9, 2020 edition of Dynamite, Shaq did an interview segment with Brandi Rhodes and Tony Schiavone To compare, that show did 995,000 viewers while the segment with Shaq did over 1.2 million viewers. The quarter featuring Shaq averaged 1,063,000 viewers and 618,000 viewers in 18-49.
