Matt Hardy On Why His Broken Gimmick Didn't Work in AEW

Matt Hardy made his AEW debut last year with his Broken gimmick, but it didn’t go exactly how he wanted.

Hardy created his “Broken” character under the Impact Wrestling banner and used it for a short time in WWE as “Woken.” He made his promotional debut at a time where AEW wasn’t having any fans in attendance for their shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While speaking to APP, Matt Hardy revealed why he dropped the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick in AEW.

“Broken Matt Hardy is a very audience-friendly character,” Hardy said. “It needs a crowd, it needs an audience, and it just was not in the cards to be Broken Matt Hardy … because his debut was in the first-ever empty arena era, pandemic-era show, the first empty arena show that AEW had.

“Broken Matt Hardy is … very theatrical, and it doesn’t translate as well to the current AEW audience that sits at home and watches (on television) because I’ve realized that this is a much younger audience. It’s a much more sports-centric-type audience.”

Hardy continued by noting that he’s happy Tony Khan gave him the chance to try it out and later switch characters to see how fans responded to it.

“I think if we had been in arenas full of people it would have been different, but considering we’re now playing to the television audience, it was better for me to zone in and focus on one thing.”

Hardy stated that he thinks his Big Money Matt character and him portraying a heel while being an older guy with a fanbase that is made up of younger fans works well. He noted that he’s happy with the groove that he’s in right now.

Hardy also talked about wrestling without a live audience last year, facing Adam Page at AEW Revolution, and more. Check out the full interview here.
