NXT Results – January 20, 2021 – Tonight’s WWE NXT episode opens up on the USA Network with a look back at the 2021 Men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic kicking off last week. We also get hype for the Women’s Dusty Classic, which kicks off tonight, and the Fight Pit main event between Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher.

– We’re live from the Capitol Wrestling Center at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida as Vic Joseph welcomes us. He’s joined at ringside by Wade Barrett and WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, who is making her return to ringside tonight after calling the action remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans chant “NXT!” as we see the Fight Pit structure set up in part of the arena.

KUSHIDA and Leon Ruff vs. Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory in a First Round Match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

Ruff and Theory start things off and they lock up.  Theory with a waist lock and he tosses Ruff aside.  Ruff with a side head lock and Theory with a shoulder tackle.  Ruff trips Theory and hits a drop kick.  Theory with an Irish whip and Ruff with a forearm from the apron.  Theory gets Ruff on his shoulders but Ruff tries to counter into a crucifix bomb but Theory blocks that.  Ruff with a drop kick for a near fall.  KUSHIDA tags in and they work on the shoulders.  KUSHIDA and Ruff with kicks to the arm.  KUSHIDA with a hammer lock using the leg and he applies a version of the Rings of Saturn using the legs.  KUSHIDA with an arm bar.  

Theory with a kick and Gargano tags in and connects with knees and kicks.  KUSHIDA with forearms Gargano holds on to the ropes to avoid a kick.  KUSHIDA with an elbow and Theory tags in and hits a rolling drop kick for a near fall.  Theory with a hard Irish whip.  Theory with a hammer lock and Gargano tags in.  They hit a double back elbow and they kick KUSHIDA.  Gargano with a snap mare and drop kick to the back of the head for a near fall.  Theory tags in and punches KUSHIDA in the ribs.  KUSHIDA blocks a suplex attempt.  Theory with a front face lock and KUSHIDA lands on his feet on a suplex attempt and Ruff tags in and hits a springboard drop kick and a second drop kick.

Ruff with forearms and a back heel kick.  Ruff with a round kick and he sends Theory into the turnbuckles.  Ruff misses a splash but lands on the turnbuckles.  Theory catches Ruff off the turnbuckles and hits Three Seconds Around the World for a near fall.  Theory with a fallaway slam.and he kicks Ruff.  Ruff is sent into Gargano’s boots before he tags back in.  Gargano chokes Ruff in the ropes.  Theory tags back in and connects with a forearm.  Theory with a back body drop.  Theory with a rear chin lock.  Gargano tags in and applies a reverse chin lock.  Ruff with elbows but Gargano with a neck breaker.  Gargano gets a near fall.  Ruff gets a boot up on Theory and he sends Gargano to the apron.

Theory blocks Ruff from crawling to his corner.  Theory grabs the ankle but Ruff with an enzuigiri.  Gargano pulls KUSHIDA off the apron to prevent the tag.  Theory sends Ruff into the turnbuckles and Theory with a back breaker and Gargano with a neck breaker for a near fall.  Theory tags in and Theory gets Ruff up but Ruff with punches and he gets to the turnbuckles.  Ruff with a cutter off the turnbuckles and both men are down.  KUSHIDA and Gargano tag in and KUSHIDA with a springboard move and he goes for the Hoverboard lock but Theory gets involved.  KUSHIDA with a handspring elbow to Theory and he kicks Gargano off the apron and then hits a tornado DDT off the apron.

KUSHIDA misses a kick to the arm and Gargano with a rolling kick.  KUSHIDA gets Gargano up for a suplex and turns it into a cross arm breaker and Theory breaks up the hold.  KUSHIDA sends Theory to the floor.  KUSHIDA with a rolling elbow but Gargano with an enzuigiri.  Theory tags in and he sets for a neck breaker and Gargano with a super kick for a near fall.  Gargano tags in and he wants Theory to hold KUSHIDA.  Ruff with a drop kick to Tehory and then Ruff with a senton off the turnbuckles onto Theory.  Gargano with an inside cradle for a near fall.

KUSHIDA with a hip toss and cartwheel followed by a drop kick.  KUSHIDA with a punch and a butterfly suplex and bridge for the three count.

Winners:  KUSHIDA and Leon Ruff

— Pete Dunne says whether you want to admit or not, we are cut from the same cloth, Finn Balor.  The difference is that you left while I built the brand.  I get compared to you.  You told me to get in line.  I am the real threat to the NXT Title.  I know you have been watching me and you know that it is inevitable.  This time, you can’t leave.  When that day comes, you will pass the torch.  History will speak well of you, but it will speak better of me.  You will be remembered as being part of my legacy.

— Vic mentions that Kyle has aggravated his jaw injury, but he is medically cleared to wrestle. We go to commercial.

— We are back and Malcolm Bivens is asked why was he outside William Regal’s office.  He says Tyler Rust is going to be a diamond in the rust.  Tyler comes out of Regal’s office and he says he has a match with Bronson Reed tonight.  Bivens says that is not the path he wanted but they will win tonight.

Karrion Kross (with Scarlett) vs. Ashante Thee Adonis

donis with a punch and Kross was not happy.  Kross catches Adonis and hits an overhead belly-to-belly suplex.  Kross with a Doomsday Saito and he hits a second one while the referee checks on Adonis.  Kross with a forearm to the back of the head and he gets the three count.

Winner:  Karrion Kross

After the match, Troy checks on Adonis and Kross with the straijacket on Troy.

— We go to MSK and Nash talks about throwing off the other teams and Wes figures out what he means.  Nash says fate brought them together and Wes says they are family.  Ember Moon talks about the skill and precision from MSK.  Wes says the hard work and dedication and the blood, sweat, and tears.  They say they are going to win the Dusty Cup. We go to commercial.

— We are back and Mercedes Martinez says being friends doesn’t help in the Dusty Classic.  Toni Storm says Kayden and Kacy can play with their Easy Bake Ovens.  What she will do to Io will be nothing compared to what I will do.  Toni wishes them luck in their first round loss.

Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik vs. Fabian Aichner and Marcel Barthel in a First Round Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Match

Barthel and Dorado start things off and Barthel backs Lince into the turnbuckles.  Barthel with forearms to the back.  Barthel with a suplex into an arm bar and hammer lock.  Dorado with a flying mare and Barthel with a double thrust to the throat to stop Dorado.  Barthel with a punch in the corner.  Barthel chokes Dorado in the ropes.  Barthel with a wrist lock but Dorado with chops.  Dorado tags in Metalik.  Dorado with a super kick and a head scissors take down.  Metalik gets on Dorado’s shoulders and hits a splash for a near fall.  Metalik with a wrist lock. 

Aichner tags in and he kicks Metalik.  Aichner kicks Metalik in the back of the head and he head butts the midsection and Metalik bounces off the ropes.  Aichner with a chop.  Metalik goes for a cross body and Aichner catches Metalik and hits a back breaker for a near fall. Metalik with an elbow and a swinging bulldog.  Dorado tags in and Metalik with a clothesline to Aichner followed by a boot to Barthel.  Dorado goes for a suicide dive but Aichner catches Dorado and sends him into the apron and he slams Dorado on the floor.  Barthel kicks Metalik on the turnbuckles and they hit a double drop kick in the tree of woe as we go to commercial.

We are back and Aichner with a head lock but Dorado with punches.  Dorado with a handspring cutter but Barthel tags in and stops Dorado from making the tag.  Dorado with kicks to Barthel but Barthel puts the leg in the ropes and Barthel kicks Dorado in the leg.  Dorado is put on the turnbuckles and Barthel with forearms but Dorado with punches.  Barthel with a kick to Dorado and he sets for a superplex.  Dorado with forearms to stop Barthel and Dorado with a tornado DDT.

Aichner and Metalik tag in and Metalik with a springboard cross body.  Metalik with a kick from the apron and he htis a head scissors off the ropes.  Metalik goes to the ropes and kicks Aichner and follows with a double jump quebrada for a near fall.  Aichner tries for a power slam but Metalik escapes.  Barthel tags in and he catches Metalik and they hit an assisted DDT for a near fall.  Barthel with a punch and Aichner tags in and Aichner goes for a suplex but Metalik gets to his feet and Dorado is tagged in.  Metalik with a missile drop kick that helps Dorado hit a Code Red for a near fall.  Aichner with an Irish wihp and Dorado with an elbow to Barthel.  Barthel pushes Dorado off the turnbuckles and Aichner catches Dorado for a delayed vertical suplex while Barthel hits a Death Valley Driver on Metalik.  Aichner gets a near fall.

Batthel tags in and Barthel with an Alabama Slam and Aichner with a kick.  They set for the European Bomb but Dorado with a face buster and Metalik takes care of Barthel.  Metalik with an Asai Moonsault onto Aichner.  Barthel with a rollup for a near fall.  Dorado with a super kick and he goes up top and hits a Shooting Star Press for the three count.

Winners:  Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik

After the match, Alexander Wolfe shows up on the stage and Barthel and Aichner do the Imperium pose.

— We go to footage from today’s weigh in for the Fight Pit match. Regal wishes them luck and Thatcher pushes Ciampa and Ciampa tries to punch Thatcher before he is pulled away. We go to commercial.

— Back from the break and NXT General Manager William Regal is on the stage with WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix. Regal introduces Phoenix and she talks about being here as NXT prepares to make history again. Beth goes on about NXT being at the forefront of the Women’s Evolution. We see images of many main roster Superstars who have gone through NXT, everyone from WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Charlotte Flair and RAW Women’s Champion Asuka, Shayna Baszler, SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss and several others. Beth talks more and kicks off the first-ever Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. All 8 teams are on the stage with Phoenix and Regal now. Beth calls Mercedes Martinez, Toni Storm, Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter to the front and they face off with the trophy behind them. They head to the ring now.

Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez vs. Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter in a First Round Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Match

Carter and Storm start things off and they go to a stalemate.  Carter with a waist lock and Storm with a wrist lock.  Carter with a reversal.  Storm with a reversal.  Carter with a shoulder tackle but Storm stays on her feet.  Storm with a shoulder tackle and drop kick for a near fall.  Martinez tags in and hits a side slam.  Storm with an elbow drop and Martinez gets a near fall.  Carter with kicks and she tags in Catanzaro.  Martinez is sent into teh turnbuckles and Catanzaro and Carter with kicks.  Catanzaro with a slingshot move for a near fall.  Martinez with a chop and punch.  Martinez with a European uppercut.

Martinez with a rear chin lock.  Martinez with boots to the head.  Catanzaro goes for a tornado DDT but Martinez blocks it and Martinez with a power slam for a near fall.

We go to commercial.

We are back and Storm gets a near fall on Catanzaro.  Storm with a punch and Martinez tags in.  Martinez with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex.  Martinez gets a near fall.  Martinez sends Kacy into the turnbuckles and she chops Kacy.  Martinez puts Kacy on the turnbuckles and Martinez sets for a superplex but Kacy blocks it.  Martinez gets Catanzaro on her shoulders  but Kacy with a Frankensteiner.  Storm tags in and Storm stops Kacy from making the tag.  Kacy is able to tag in Carter and Carter with forearms to Storm and a drop kick to Martinez.  Carter with an elbow to Storm and Martinez in the corner followed by a drop kick to Martinez in the corner and a splash on Storm.

Carter with a victory roll and she hits a thrust kick.  Carter with a boot to the head.  Carter with a waist lock and an O’Connor Roll for a near fall.  Carter with a drop kick and Martinez breaks up the cover.  Kacy with a kick to send Martinez to the floor followed by a pescado on Martinez.  Storm with a head butt and German suplex.  Storm with a waist lock and Carter with an elbow.  Storm with a knee bar into a single leg crab and she stands on Carter’s back.  

Io Shirai pulls Martinez off the apron and sends Martinez into the announce table.  Storm looks for her partner and does not know where Martinez went.  Carter kicks Storm.  Catanzaro tags in and Carter with a twisting leg lock and Catanzaro with a 630 splash for the three count,.

Winners: Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter

— Finn Balor is in the back and McKenzie asks where is he going and Finn enters William Regal’s office.  He says he wants Pete Dunne, but he will deal with Oney and Danny first.  Regal says he has to protect Finn from himself so he tells Finn he has to get a partner.  Finn says he doesn’t have friends.  All he has now is enemies.  Regal tells Finn that he needs to keep his enemies close. Brons Reed walks in the back and Isaiah Scott stops him to give him some advice. We go to commercial.

— We are back with Tommaso CIampa being given instructions by the referee.

— McKenzie Mitchell is in the back and she says that Adonis will not be medically cleared to wrestle in the Dusty Classic on Friday. Kacy and Kayden enter the interview area and they say that no one believed us and we beat two of the toughest women and we will win it all.

Bronson Reed vs. Tyler Rust (with Malcolm Bivens)

We go back to the ring and out comes Tyler Rust with Malcolm Bivens. Bronson Reed is out next. Vic shows us what Isaiah “Swerve” Scott said in the previous backstage segment. He told Reed not to get in his business like he did with Jake Atlas last week, and then wished him good luck tonight.

The bell rings and here we go. Rust avoids an attack early on but Reed goes to work on the arm and hand. They tangle some more and Reed applies a headlock. Reed ends up sending Rust out to the floor. Malcolm helps him up as the referee counts. Rust runs back in and kicks but it’s blocked. Reed decks him and presses him high in the air, then drops him with a shot to the gut. Reed then nails a big reverse fall-away slam, sending Rust back to the floor.

Bivens gives Rust a pep talk but here comes Reed grabbing him. Rust fights Reed off and goes to work on the arm. Rust fights back in and drops Reed with an arm bar. The camera cuts backstage and we see NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai brawling with Toni Storm as officials try to keep them apart.

Reed fights Rust off but Rust kicks him and nails an uppercut. Reed blocks a kick and drops Rust to one knee with a right hand. Reed drops Rust twice with two forearms. Reed whips Rust into the ropes and levels him with a running splash. Reed with a splash in the corner as Bivens looks on. Reed keeps control and chokeslams Rust for a close 2 count. Reed goes to the second rope but Rust runs up with a right hand to daze him. Rust climbs up and works on the arm but gets sent to the mat. Rust runs back up with a pump kick to the jaw. Rust then nails a big super Samoan Drop from the top for a close 2 count.

Reed blocks a move and nails a senton in the middle of the ring while Rust is down. Reed goes back to the top for the Tsunami Splash for the pin to win.

Winner: Bronson Reed

After the match, Reed stands tall as the music hits. Bivens scratches his head at ringside as we go to replays. Reed poses in the middle of the ring as Bivens gives Rust a pep talk on the apron, telling him he will get it next time. Bivens shakes Rust’s hand and keeps encouraging him as they head to the back.

– McKenzie Mitchell is backstage with Finn Balor now, asking him about his potential tag team partner against Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. Balor says there are a few people around here that owe him favors, and it’s time to have a chat. He walks off and we go to commercial.

– Back from the break and we see referee Drake Younger going over the Fight Pit rules with Timothy Thatcher.

– Finn Balor walks into The Undisputed Era’s locker room. Adam Cole tells Roderick Strong and Kyle O’Reilly to look at what the cat drug in. Balor says the cat is looking for his payback. Balor says they’re all grown men. He looks at O’Reilly and says O’Reilly knows why he’s here. Balor asks O’Reilly if he’s in, or is he still sucking his meals through a straw? Strong tells Balor to watch his mouth but Cole holds him back. Balor looks at O’Reilly and asks, “Well?” O’Reilly says he’s in. Balor says he will see O’Reilly next week. O’Reilly agrees, champ. It looks like they will face Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch next week.

– NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar comes out with a mic and says a real champion does what he wants, when he wants. We are looking at a champion of champions. Escobar goes on about what a true champion is. A champion of champions doesn’t have to conquer a curse like NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano, doesn’t have a glass jaw like NXT Champion Finn Balor. We see Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde. Escobar says he doesn’t need the pomp & circumstances like Karrion Kross, and when it’s time to make it to the first title defense they fail. Escobar goes on and enters the ring now. He’s backed up every word he’s said and beat every person in his way. He mentions how Lucha House Party came to NXT to try and take over his empire but he sent them packing. He tells Wilde and Mendoza that they have won their first match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, and that puts them one step closer to becoming the NXT Tag Team Champions, and joining him right here as the champions of champions.

The Lucha House Party music interrupts. Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik hit the ring but they get beat down. Mendoza and Wilde hold Lince as Escobar goes to the top but here comes Curt Stallion to make the save. He yanks Escobar off the top and then they clear the ring of Legado del Fantasma. Lucha House Party’s music hits as they stand tall with Stallion while Legado del Fantasma recovers at ringside.

– McKenzie is backstage with Killian Dain and Drake Maverick, asking about next week’s quarterfinals match against MSK. Drake cuts a promo on how he and Dain will win the Dusty Classic. Dain says that was pretty good and Drake thanks him. Dain pats Drake on the back but almost hurts him. Dain walks off.

– We see Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher walking backstage. Alicia Taylor is standing in the Fight Pit structure now as it’s lit up. She welcomes everyone to Fight Pit and a “NXT!” chant starts up as we go back to commercial.

– Back from the break and McKenzie is with Curt Stallion and Lucha House Party backstage. Legado del Fantasma interrupts and Santos Escobar promises to expose Stallion for the rookie he is and embarrass him next week with the NXT Cruiserweight Title on the line.

Fight Pit: Timothy Thatcher vs. Tommaso Ciampa

We go to the Fight Pit structure for tonight’s main event as Timothy Thatcher walks up the steps. He stops as the catwalk referee and is checked out before allowing to proceed. Thatcher paces the catwalk as we see another referee down on the bottom level. Tomaso Ciampa is out next. Ciampa marches up the Fight Pit steps and stops at the first referee. Ciampa is also checked out as Thatcher stares him down.

The bell rings and Taylor goes over the rules as the fighters stare each other down. The decision must happen in the Pit, the only way to win is by knockout or submission, and there are no pinfalls. Taylor does formal ring introductions. The bell rings again and here we go. Ciampa stalks Thatcher on the catwalk. Thatcher backs away but charges and they start brawling as fans cheer them on. Ciampa tries to toss Thatcher over the railing to the floor or hit a Willow’s Bell. Thatcher fights back and hits a big uppercut, and another.

Thatcher grinds Ciampa’s face into the railing now. Thatcher with more right hands, and another big uppercut. Thatcher with a suplex on top of the perch. Thatcher goes for the single-leg Crab on the perch while kicking Ciampa in the back. Ciampa resists the submission and kicks Thatcher away. Ciampa charges with a running boot to the side of the face. Ciampa stomps away while Thatcher is down. Ciampa with a big chop. Thatcher fights back as they continue trading strikes. Ciampa with big chops against the railing. Thatcher fights back with rights of his own, bringing Ciampa to one knee and then down on the catwalk. Ciampa crawls away. Thatcher tries to send him face-first into the steel railing but it’s blocked. Ciampa grinds Thatcher’s face into the railing again. Ciampa stomps some more while Thatcher is down. Ciampa slingshots Thatcher’s throat under a part of the railing and smiles. We go to a picture-in-picture commercial break.

Ciampa ends up knocking Thatcher to the bottom level during the break. Ciampa beats Thatcher around the cage but Thatcher takes Ciampa down and grounds him as the referee checks on him. Ciampa fights back with a chop but Thatcher uppercuts him back down. Thatcher stomps on the limbs and drives a knee into Ciampa’s back while he’s down. Thatcher with a headlock in the middle of the cage. We come back from the break and Thatcher sends Ciampa face-first into the steel but Ciampa does the same. Ciampa keeps sending Thatcher face-first into the cage walls.

Ciampa with a running knee to the face, sending Thatcher face-first into the steel again. The referee counts but Thatcher makes it back to his feet at the 6 count as Ciampa attacks. Thatcher blocks the Fairy Tale Ending and sends Ciampa shoulder-first into the steel. Thatcher grinds Ciampa into the steel and tries to bend his hand into the corner of the cage post. Ciampa fights back but Thatcher rams him into the cage wall, then slams him in the middle of the structure with a suplex. Thatcher grounds Ciampa again, focusing on his arm and shoulder.

Ciampa breaks the hold but Thatcher stays on top of him and bends the fingers back. Thatcher smiles at Ciampa’s pain. Ciampa sends Thatcher face-first into the steel. Ciampa goes on and launches Thatcher face-first into the cage wall again. Ciampa with a single-leg Crab again. Ciampa breaks it and kicks Thatcher in the spine again. More back and forth between the two fighters. Thatcher kicks Ciampa away, into the steel. Thatcher applies a Sleeper hold in the middle of the ring now.

Ciampa starts to fade as the referee checks on him. Ciampa breaks the hold with a back kick that goes below the belt, but is still legal. Ciampa drapes Thatcher over the referee’s back while the referee is checking on Thatcher, and nails Willow’s Bell. Thatcher makes it back up at the 9 count. Ciampa immediately attacks. Thatcher blocks the Fairy Tale Ending. They trade big strikes in the middle of the ring now. Thatcher rams Ciampa into the cage wall. Ciampa drives Thatcher’s head into the cage post, then drops him with a Fairy Tale Ending. Ciampa jumps on Thatcher’s back and rolls him over in a Sleeper on the mat. Thatcher fights to his feet and breaks the hold. Thatcher rams them back into the steel and Ciampa goes down.

Thatcher with another Sleeper hold now. Ciampa gets wedged in between two of the cage walls in a corner now. Thatcher wails away on him. Thatcher uses that to apply a modified Stretch Muffler now. Ciampa finally taps out as he’s all twisted up in the corner and Thatcher wins.

Winner: Timothy Thatcher

After the match, Thatcher drops to his knees and poses as he remains undefeated in the Fight Pit. Thatcher stands tall now as his music hits. We go to replays. The referee raises Thatcher’s arm as we see Ciampa down in the corner of the cage, trying to recover. The referee checks on Ciampa while Thatcher drops to his knees and stares Ciampa down. Thatcher comes over to Ciampa and drops to his knees, then stares Ciampa down. Thatcher nods at Ciampa in an apparent show of respect as NXT goes off the air.
