Keith Lee Vs. Randy Orton Set For Payback, Drew McIntyre May Have Suffered a Career-Threatening Injury

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre kicked off this week’s episode of  RAW.

The segment ended with Orton attacking Drew on the stage and in the Gorilla Position. Orton punted McIntyre twice as officials pleaded with Orton to back away.

Later in the night, Randy Orton came to the ring to discuss his loss at WWE SummerSlam. Orton said he’s a man of his word, so when he promised to take the WWE Championship from McIntyre, he meant it. He said he’s still the greatest wrestler in the world.

Keith Lee made his debut on WWE RAW by interrupting the Legend Killer. Lee introduced himself to Orton and said he wants to give Orton the chance to bask in his glory. The newcomer said he wanted to face Orton in a match.

Orton had a brief response to the challenge. “Maybe later,” said Orton. After a commercial break, the match was confirmed for later in the show.

During the match, Lee countered Orton’s veteran expertise with his impressive athleticism. Lee caught a punch from Orton and crushed his hand. The newcomer then tossed Orton with a belly-to-belly suplex. Orton took control by sending Lee shoulder-first into the ring post. Orton grounded Lee, but the former NXT Champion rallied. He crushed Orton with a crossbody, but the Viper planted him with a spike DDT. Drew McIntyre showed up and pulled Orton out of the ring and attacked him. Orton ran away, and the WWE Champion stood stall.

While speaking backstage with Charly Caruso, Randy Orton attacked Drew from behind and he hits another running kick to the head. Referees show up and yell at Randy and hold their hands up.

After the third punt from Orton, Drew McIntyre was taken to a local medical facility. It was announced by WWE that McIntyre may have suffered a career-ending skull fracture. Obviously, that is just a storyline injury but it looks like, at least as of now, the WWE Championship rematch is not happening this Sunday at the Payback pay-per-view.

In a follow-up segment, McIntyre was taken away in an ambulance and Charly Caruso said that he would undergo more evaluations. It was also announced that Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton will happen this Sunday at Payback.
