Here are the results of the first night of Wrestle Kingdom 14 from the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan:
Mayu Iwatani and Arisa Hoshiki vs. Giulia and Hana Kimura
This match did not air on the live broadcast. Iwatani won the match for her team by pinning Kimura after hitting a moonsault. Hana and Giulia did not get along.
Great Bash Heel (Tomoaki Honma and Togi Makabe), Yuya Uemura, and Yota Tsuji vs. Toa Henare, Alex Coughlin, Clark Connors, and Karl Fredericks
Henare won the match for his team with the Rock Bottom and pin on Tsuji. Henare looked really good in this match.
Tencozy (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima) vs. Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi
Tenzan won the match for his team by pinning Nakanishi.
Jushin Thunder Liger, Tatsumi Fujinami, The Great Sasuke, and Tiger Mask (with El Samurai) vs. Naoki Sano, Shinjiro Otani, Tatsuhito Takaiwa, and Ryusuke Taguchi (with Kuniaki Kobayashi)
This is the first match on the main portion of the show. Liger picked the participants of this match as he wanted old friends and rivals to be in the ring with him. Liger started the match with Sano. Things broke down with everyone fighting around ringside in the closing minutes of the match. Taguchi won with the sitdown chickenwing slam on Liger. He pinned Liger to win the match for his team. Liger’s final match is tomorrow night. Liger looks like he can still go for a few more years.
Los Ingobernables de Japon (Evil, Sanada, Shingo Takagi, and Bushi) vs. Suzuki-gun (Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr., and El Desperado)
ZSJ won the match for his team by forcing Bushi to submit to the omoplate. Great action this match. Sanada and Sabre, Jr. briefly went at it after the match. They will face off tomorrow night.
Chaos (Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, and Yoshi-Hashi) vs. Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens, Kenta, and Yujiro Takahashi)
Good match. Late in the match there was a nice looking brainbuster by Ishii onto Bad Luck Fale. Goto pinned Takahashi to win the match for his team.
IWGP Tag Team Championship
Guerrillas of Destiny (Tanga Loa and Tama Tonga) (Champions) vs. FinJuice (Juice Robinson and David Finlay)
There were audio problems during G.O.D.’s entrance. Robinson and Finlay went to attack G.O.D. during their entrance but it backfired on them. Late in the match, it looked like G.O.D’ was about to win the match with a powerbomb off the top on Finlay but Finlay turned it into a hurricanrana. G.O.D. almost won after Jado hit Finlay with a kendo stick to the face but he kicked out. Finlay pinned Tama Tonga after Tonga took the left hand to God and the springboard into a modified cutter from Finlay off the ropes. Robinson and Finlay are the new champs.
IWGP United States Championship – Texas DeathMatch
Lance Archer (Champion) vs. Jon Moxley
The only way to win this match is via 10-count knockout or via submission. Moxley tossed in a bunch of chairs in the ring during his entrance. Moxley took a brutal chair shot to the head and some brutal shots to the back in the opening minutes of the match. Archer tried a move off the ropes but he lost his footing a Moxley took over on offense with several kendo stick shots and a trash can lid to the head. Archer took over on offense and that included a dive over the top onto Moxley, who was surrounded by young boys at ringside. They were all taken out by the dive from Archer. Archer also did the blackout on Moxley through 4 chairs that were set up in the ring. It looked brutal. Moxley was able to fight back and he hit the double arm DDT but Archer was able to get up before the 10 count. Archer took over on offense and then locked in the EBD claw with a plastic bag covering Moxley’s face to suffocate him but Mox fought out of it. Archer jammed his spiked helmet into Mox’s face and then tried to chokeslam him through 2 tables set up at ringside but Mox countered with the Death Rider through the 2 tables. Archer was unable to get to his feet. Mox is the new IWGP United States Champion. Mox grabbed the mic and said the score would be settled tomorrow night when he faces Juice Robinson.
IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship
Will Ospreay (Champion) vs. Hiromu Takahashi
Ospreay worked on Takahashi’s neck throughout this match. This was a great match with plenty of cool offensive moves. Ospreay looked great as usual and it didn’t look like Takahashi had ring rust after his long absence from his neck issues. Late in the match, Ospreay hit a beautiful shooting star and then an OsCutter but Takahashi kicked out of pin attempts on two separate occasions. Ospreay was about to finish off Takahashi with the spinning back elbow to the back of the head but Takahashi countered into a pop-up powerbomb but he was too weak to go for the pin. They traded forearm shots and Ospreay tried for the cutter again but it was reversed into a German suplex by Takahashi. Takahashi hit a Canadian Destroyer but Ospreay kicked out of the pin attempt. After several reversals, Ospreay hit the back elbow but Takahashi fought back with the Storm Breaker. Takahashi hit the Inside Out lariat and then the Time Bomb and a pin attempt that Ospreay kicked out of. Incredible. Takahashi hit a modified version of a cradle piledriver and he pinned Ospreay to win the title. Incredible match.
IWGP Intercontinental Championship
Jay White (Champion) vs. Tetsuya Naito
Naito had to deal with Gedo at ringside in the opening minutes of the match. At one point, Gedo smashed a chair on Naito’s knee while Red Shoes was distracted. White worked over Naito’s left leg and that became an issue late in the match as Naito had trouble standing and moving around on it. Naito was able to fight back and get on offense until Red Shoes was accidentally taken out and a distraction from Gedo allowed White to hit a low blow. Naito took over on offense again but he had to fight off Gedo and White nailed Naito with a chair to the head and then a sleeper suplex followed by another sleeper suplex but Naito had a burst of energy and he hit the Destino but he was too tired to attempt the pin. Naito hit the Poison Rana and another Destino but White kicked out of the pin attempt. Naito hit another Destino and then pinned White to win the title.
Kevin Kelly announced that the paid attendance is 40,008 and the place is sold out.
IWGP Heavyweight Championship
Kazuchika Okada (Champion) vs. Kota Ibushi
This was clearly going to be a long match since they wrestled a slow pace for the first 15 or so minutes. Late in the match, Ibushi no-sold a bunch of Okada’s signature moves. He nailed Okada with stiff kicks and really stiff punches to the body. Okada fought back and delivered a tombstone on the edge of the ring. Ibushi got back into the ring at the count of 19 and Okada followed up with a flurry of offense. Ibushi came back with his own offense, including a German suplex from the ring apron into the ring at the 30-minute mark. Okada countered a lawn dart attempt with a spinning tombstone but Ibushi came back with a Rainmaker clothesline. Ibushi followed up with a running knee. Okada kicked out at 1 so Ibushi hit a knee to the back of the head and Okada kicked out. It was almost over when Okada took a knee to the face but he barely kicked out of the pin attempt. Okada surprised Ibushi with a dropkick out of nowhere but he was too weak to try for the pin. They got back up to their feet and traded forearm shots and Ibushi hit kicks to the head and body to take Okada down. Moments later, Okada was on offense and the tried a drop kick off the top but Ibushi countered into a powerbomb. Ibushi crashed and burned off the top and Okada caught him with a spinning Rainmaker and another one. Okada tried to pin him but Ibushi kicked out after taking two consecutive Rainmaker clotheslines. Okada hit another Rainmaker and then he followed up with another. That was not enough so he went for another but Ibushi caught him with a head kick and a v-trigger. Okada countered with a package piledriver and another Rainmaker. That was enough to get the pin and the win. Okada retains and will face Naito tomorrow night.
