WWE Cancels Backlash PPV, Could NXT TakeOver: San Jose Be Next?

WWE Cancels Backlash PPV, Could NXT TakeOver: San Jose Be Next?

Multiple sources are reporting that WWE will be cancelling their scheduled WWE Backlash 2019 pay-per-view.

The WWE Backlash PPV was scheduled for June 16th in San Diego, California, however with WWE moving their PPV in Saudi Arabia to June 7th, the company has reportedly decided to scratch the 6/16 San Diego PPV. The belief is WWE did not want to promote two PPVs nine days apart, even if they have promoted multiple big events in the past.

While WWE never officially announced the WWE Backlash 2019 PPV for San Diego, CA. on 6/16, they did list it on their touring schedule and on paperwork they filed in court.

Additionally, WWE created a mini-website for the PPV listed at WWE.com/wwe-backlash-san-diego, which now redirects to an “Access Denied” error page as opposed to a “Page Not Found: Parts Unknown” message.

The Pechanga Arena also had the show listed on their event calendar with updated graphics.

Dave Meltzer noted on Sunday’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE is also now in the situation of having to deal with all of the weekend house shows in the California area, including Oakland, Stockton and San Jose, as well as the NXT TakeOver: San Jose 2019 special expected for June 8th at the SJSU Center.

With the 6/8 NXT TakeOver special set for the day after the WWE Saudi Arabia PPV on 6/7, it is possible WWE could keep it on the calendar, as it would be somewhat of a traditional major WWE PPV weekend, with the one-two punch of WWE and NXT on consecutive nights. Obviously the only difference would be that the WWE PPV would be airing the night before the NXT PPV, which is the opposite of how things are usually lined up.

We will keep you posted as more information regarding the WWE Backlash cancellation, and all of the fallout from it, as more information becomes available.
