Regarding Roman Reigns having leukemia and giving up the Universal Title, very few people within WWE reportedly knew about the situation.
Dave Meltzer reports that “the only thing people knew is that Reigns would open the show with a promo and relinquish the title.” Vince McMahon was not backstage at RAW but was in close contact with everyone.
According to Meltzer, it’s believed that the only people that knew what Reigns was going to say were Kevin Dunn, Triple H, Mark Carrano in talent relations and writers Dave Kapoor and Ed Koskey. About an hour before RAW, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose were allegedly told that Reigns would be giving up the title to open the show but a reason wasn’t given as to why. The belief is that Michael Cole also knew about Reigns giving up the title but also wasn’t given a reason.
Meltzer notes that Reigns reportedly found out about the diagnosis either on or right before Thursday, October 18th and Vince McMahon found out that night. On Friday, it’s believed that key people in WWE began making plans on how to move forward. As previously noted, Reigns was pulled from the live events over the weekend.
