WWE Smackdown Results - July 17, 2018

Tonight’s WWE SmackDown opens up with stills from new WWE United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura’s win over Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules. We also see stills from Randy Orton’s return after the match.

– We’re live from the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as Tom Phillips welcomes us. He’s joined by Corey Graves and Byron Saxton.

– We go right to the ring and Greg Hamilton introduces Jeff Hardy.

Jeff Hardy says he may look like Jeff Hardy and may make an entrance like Jeff Hardy. He says he may wear face paint like Jeff Hardy. He does not feel like Jeff Hardy. He says he feels incomplete. Jeff says his heart is broken because he is not US Champion anymore because of what Shinsuke Nakamura did to him. Nakamura showed that he lacks morality and honor.

Jeff says that means that Nakamura is a no good low down jackass. Nakamura used a low blow because that was the only way that he could beat him. Jeff says he should not have continued but he wanted to get his hands on Nakamura. Tonight, his focus is clear. Jeff says he will make Nakamura fade away and classify himself as obsolete and win back his United States Title.


We see Nakamura watching in the back and he is asked by Renee to comment on what Jeff said. Nakamura says that Jeff is a sad clown and he wears face paint to hide his tears. Nakamura says it is his title. He says that is a reason to smile. Tonight, he gives everyone a reason to smile by making a clown cry again. Nakamura says God Bless America.

– Still to come, The Miz hosts a funeral for Team Hell No and gives their eulogy.

AJ Styles vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas

We go to the ring and out comes WWE Champion AJ Styles for our non-title opening match. We go to commercial.

They lock up and Almas with a waist lock and side head lock. Almas with an arm drag. Styles with a waist lock but Almas with a wrist lock and waist lock. Almas with an arm drag. Styles with a waist lock but Almas with a back elbow and side head lock. Styles backs Almas into the corner and Almas wtih a kick and he returns to the side head lock. Almas holds on to the side head lock when AJ tries to send Almas off the ropes. Styles with forearms and he tries for the Phenomenal Drop Kick but Almas hangs in the ropes and goes tranquilo while Vega lies under him.

Styles slides to the floor and he trips Almas before sending Almas to the floor. Styles sends Almas into the ringside barrier and then back into the ring. Almas with a boot to the head and a running knee into teh corner. Almas with a back senton for a near fall. Almas with a forearm and kicks. Almas with an Irish whip and he misses a knee in the corner and hits the turnbuckles before going over the top rope to the floor. Styles with a slingshot forearm to Almas on the floor. Styles sends Almas back into the ring and he blocks a kick and takes Almas down with a dragon screw leg whip.

Almsa goes to the floor and Vega blocks AJ’s path to allow Almas to send AJ into the apron. Almas with an arm bar. Almas misses a boot and AJ with a sit out gourdbuster on Almas. Styles with punches and a clothesline followed by a sliding forearm. Styles gets Almas on his shoulders for a moment but Almas escapes and hits a drop kick. Styles with kicks but he misses a back fist. Almas with elbows and then he puts Styles in the ropes and hits a back breaker and then he sends Styles to the mat for a near fall.

Almas puts Styles on the turnbuckles and hits a springboard drop kick. Almas sets for the running knees but Styles gets up and hits the Ushigoroshi and gets a near fall. Styles sets for the Styles Clash but Almas puts Styles on the apron. Styles with a forearm and he sets for the Phenomenal forearm but Almas with a back elbow to the leg to stop AJ. Almas goes to the turnbuckles. He hits a double jump moonsault for a near fall.

Almas goes for a suplex but AJ lands on his feet and he hits an enzuigiri. Almas with a kick and then he goes to the turnbuckles and sets for a tornado reverse DDT but Styles with a Pele Kick. Styles sets for the superplex but Almas ties Styles in the turnbuckles and hits a double stomp to the chest and he hits the running double knee strike. Almas gets a near fall. Almas sets for the hammer lock DDT but Styles counters into the Calf Crusher and Almas taps out.

Winner: AJ Styles

– We take a look back at highlights from the WWE Championship Match from Extreme Rules.


Aiden English walks in the back and he says that he is probably the last person you want to see and he says he has to apologize. We see that he is talking to Lana. Aiden says he wishes he could take it back, but he cannot. That was the pinnacle of what Rusev has been working for. Aiden wants Lana to talk to Rusev. Lana says Rusev is angry and disappointed and he needs space. Lana says that she does not understand why he is coming to her. She asks him if he is what is best for Rusev. Aiden says maybe he does not deserve forgiveness, but he has Rusev’s back. He owes so much to Rusev and he is here for a second chance. Aiden says everyone deserves a second chance. Lana says she will take it into consideration.

Becky Lynch vs. Mandy Rose

We go to the ring and out comes Becky Lynch. Back to commercial.

They lock up and Mandy with a wrist lock but Becky with a reversal. Mandy with a punch but she misses a kick. Becky with a back heel kick. Mandy with an Irish whip and Becky moves and hits a springboard kick. Becky goes for another springboard side kick but Mandy grabs the leg and pulls Becky to the mat for a near fall. Mandy kicks Becky in the corner. Becky with a punch but Mandy with forearms and a suplex. Mandy gets a near fall.

Mandy stretches Becky but Becky with punches to escape the hold. Mandy with an Irish whip and drop kick. Mandy with a bicycle knee but she can only get a near fall. Mandy with punches and she gets a near fall. Mandy returns to the neck vice while trapping one of Becky’s arms. Becky escapes and gets a near fall with an O’Connor Roll. Becky with a boot and a rollup for a near fall. Becky misses a clothesline but hits a forearm and drop kick. Becky with an exploder and then she goes for DisArmHer and Mandy taps out.

Winner: Becky Lynch

After the match, Becky gets a mic and she says that winning feels good, no it feels great. She says she has been patiently waiting and sometimes not patiently waiting. She says she has been fighting hard for everyone. Becky says she is just getting started. She tells Carmella that straight fire is coming for you. It is time for her to become Smackdown champion again.


Paige is in the office and she asks if Carmella heard that. Paige says that she was talking about the fans cheering for Becky. Paige asks how is her boyfriend doing and Carmella denies that James is her boyfriend. Carmella reminds Paige who she has beaten. Carmella says she deserves another Mellabration. Paige says she will do it, but Carmella has to win her match against Becky Lynch. Carmella refuses to defend her title next week. Paige says it will not be a title match, but if Becky beats Carmella next week, Becky will face Carmella for the title at SummerSlam,


Tye DIllinger is getting ready for his match and R Truth enters and he asks Tye if he is ready for the match. Tye says after last week, he doesn’t need a pep talk. Truth says he can’t hear him. Tye says he will take care of Samoa Joe and heads to the ring. Truth turns around and we see he is on his bluetooth and he tells Tye he didn’t tell him to face Joe. Back to commercial.

– We are back with footage of Samoa Joe attacking Tye Dillinger last week before their scheduled match.

Tye Dillinger vs. Samoa Joe

Dillinger with a forearm as the bell rings and he follows with kicks. Joe goes to teh floor and he pulls Dillinger to the apron. Dillinger kicks Joe into the announce table and he punches Joe. Dillinger with knees and then Joe sends Dillinger groin first into the ring post. Joe with jabs followed by an Irish whip and back elbow followed by an enzuigiri. Joe asks Tye if this is what he wanted and Joe with knees and kicks. Joe with the Kokina Clutch and Tye passes out.

Winner: Samoa Joe

After the match, Joe stands tall as we go to replays. Joe looks out as his music plays.

– Still to come, Hardy vs. Nakamura and The Miz’s funeral for Team Hell No. Back to commercial.

In the Arena:

Back from the break and funeral music plays as The Miz makes his way out, dressed in an all-black suit. There are funeral-related graphics on the screens. Miz stops on the stage and waits as a few men push out a cart that has a mannequin head with a Kane mask on it. Miz greets some fans at ringside and offers condolences as they head to the ring.

Miz enters the ring and we see photos of Team Hell No on display, along with a wreath. Miz takes the mannequin Kane head and places it on a podium. Miz thanks everyone for being here and says he is just as sad. Fans chant and Miz says tonight is not about him because tonight we pay respects to Kane and Daniel Bryan. Miz says they were able to put aside their differences to become tag team champions 5 years ago but not at Extreme Rules as they loss to SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers. Miz goes on about their friendship, making sure to mention bad parts. Miz says Bryan made the same mistake of reuniting with Kane recently on SmackDown. Miz says now that Team Hell No is 6 feet under, he would like for everyone to stand up and join him in honoring them with a moment of silence.

Miz tells the people to show some respect for the Moment of Silence. Miz does not appreciate the response of the crowd. Miz says Yes chants might have been appropriate. Miz says I Told You So. Miz says he told you how this would end. He was in this ring and he said that Kane was a broken down demon and he was right. Miz says he was right about your bogus hero. Daniel was never a world beating wrestler. He is a glory hound obsessed with setting impossible goals to tug at your heart strings. Daniel threw one last hail mary pass to remain relevant. That is the reason for the sappy Team Hell No reunion. It was just to bring out his greatest hits. As sad as this whole thing has been, there is no one sadder than Daniel Bryan. Whether he can accept it or not, deep down inside, he knows that his return from injury is a bust. Every week, Daniel is hurting his legacy and no one else has the courage to tell him. Daniel will never main event Wrestlemania again and his career is dead.

Bryan’s music hits and out he comes with an attack to Miz from behind. Bryan attacks the pallbearers next. Miz retreats from the ring and runs up the ramp. Bryan stands tall in the ring as the “yes!” chants start up. Bryan destroys some of the funeral items in the ring as another “yes!” chant starts up. Bryan delivers the knee strike to one of the pallbearers. Bryan points up at Miz and stares him down as the music hits. Bryan leads the “yes!” chant again as Miz looks on from the stage.

– Still to come, Hardy gets his rematch.

– The New Day is backstage. Big E and Xavier Woods are hyping Kofi Kingston up it appears. Kofi vs. Eric Young is next. Back to commercial.

Eric Young (with Killian Dain and Alexander Wolfe) vs. Kofi Kingston (with Xavier Woods and Big E)

They lock up and Young with a wrist lock. Kofi with a reversal and Young with a reversal and front face lock. Kofi with a kick after avoiding a clothesline from Young. Kofi with a drop kick for a near fall. Young with a forearm to the back. Kofi trips Young and goes to the floor. Kofi with a springboard clothesline and he clotheslines Young over the top rope to the floor. Young want the referee to hold Kofi back as he tries to get back into the ring. Young with a shoudler and he slides under Kofi but he is sent to the floor again.

Kofi misses a baseball slide and Young with a kick and he sends Kofi into the apron. They return to the ring and Young gets a near fall. Young with a shoulder tackle. Kofi with a jumping back elbow for a near fall. Young backs Kofi into the corner and punches him when the referee is not looking. Young goes into the turnbuckles but Young rolls and trips Kofi on the apron. Young with forearms to the back of the neck and then he kicks Kofi in the back of the head. Young with a catapult into the bottom rope and he gets a near fall.

Young with a neck breaker for a near fall. Young works on the neck. Kofi with punches but Young with a knee to the midsection. Young sends Kofi into the turnbuckles and punches him. Young with a dragon sleeper on the turnbuckles. Young comes off the turnbuckles and into a drop kick from Kofi. Kofi with chops and a drop kick followed by a jumping clothesline. Kofi with the Boom Drop.

Kofi sets for Trouble in Paradise but he misses. Young with a rollup for a near fall. Kofi with an Irish whip and Young does the Flair flip and Kofi meets him on the turnbuckles for a butterfly superplex. Kofi gets a near fall. Young rolls to the floor. Kofi with a plancha over the referee onto all three members of Sanity. Kofi with SOS and he gets a near fall. Kofi misses a splash into teh corner but he hits a pendulum kick. Kofi goes up top and Wolfe gets on the apron. BIg E stops Wolfe and Woods stops Dain. Kofi with an O’Connor Roll and Dain sends Woods into Kofi on the kick out. Young with a wheelbarrow neck breaker for the three count.

Winner: Eric Young

– Shinsuke Nakamura is in the back and he is staring at his title belt.

– Jeff Hardy stares into the camera as we go to commercial.

– Back from the break and Tom hypes Becky vs. Carmella for next week. Becky earns a SummerSlam title shot if she can win. Graves says Paige will announce the SummerSlam opponent for WWE Champion AJ Styles next week as well.

WWE United States Title Match: Jeff Hardy vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

We go to the ring for tonight’s main event as Jeff Hardy makes his way out for his rematch from Extreme Rules. New WWE United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura is out next. We get formal ring introductions from Hamilton.

Hardy attacks as the bell rings and Nakamura goes for a low blow but Hardy escapes. Hardy with a drop kick and he mocks Nakamura with boots in the corner. Hardy comes off the ring steps with a splash. Hardy goes up top and Nakamura goes to the floor.

We go to commercial.

We are back and Hardy is down in the mat. Nakamura with kicks but Hardy blocks a kick and Nakamura with an enzuigiri for a near fall. Nakamura gets a number of near falls. Nakamura with a rear chin lock and a knee in the back. Hardy with elbows but Nakamura sends Hardy to the mat. Nakamura sends Hardy into the turnbuckles and he chokes Hardy in the corner. Nakamura with kicks in the corner. Nakamura with kicks to Hardy.

Nakamura with a front face lock. Nakamura misses a knee drop and Hardy sends Nakamura into the turnbuckles as he goes around the ring with Nakamura. Hardy gets a near fall. Hardy lands on his feet on a suplex attempt. Hardy with a side Russian leg sweep and a rollup for a near fall. Hardy with forearms to the back and he kicks Nakamura and goes for the Twist of Fate but Nakamura sends Hardy into the turnbuckles and Nakamura kicks Hardy in the neck. Nakamura pulls Hardy over the apron and he connects with a running knee lift as we go to commercial.

We are back and Nakamura with kicks and an Irish whip. Hardy with elbows when Nakamura charges into the corner. Hardy with a boot and he goes up and hits Whisper in the Wind for a near fall. Hardy with kicks and a running forearm. Hardy with a reverse atomic drop and leg drop followed by a drop kick for a near fall. Hardy with a kick and Nakamura backs Hardy into the corner. Hardy with a mule kick and Hardy goes for the hesitation kick in the corner but Nakamura gets his feet up. Nakamura puts Hardy on the turnbuckles and connects with a running knee for a near fall.

Hardy with elbows but Nakamura with a lungblower and sliding kick for a near fall. Nakamura with knees to the ribs and then he sets for Kinshasa. Hardy with slingblade and he goes up top. Nakamura crotches Hardy and kicks Hardy on the turnbuckles. Hardy with a Twist of Fate and Hardy goes up top. Hardy hits the Swanton but Randy Orton pulls Hardy out of the ring and the referee calls for the bell.

Winner by DQ: Jeff Hardy

After the bell, Orton destroys Hardy at ringside and beats him against the steel steps while talking trash. Nakamura takes his title and watches from the ramp as Orton continues to unload on Hardy at ringside while some fans boo. Hardy fights back but Orton hits him with a shot to the eye and then tosses him into the steel steps. Orton stomps Hardy on top of the steps. Orton reaches down and says Hardy will have to wait to find out why he’s doing this. Orton grabs one of Hardy’s ear rings and stretches it as referees try to get him to stop. Fans boo as Orton tosses Hardy over the announce table. Officials run out to reprimand Orton for torturing Hardy, trying to get him to leave. Orton yells out and wonders where Nakamura is. Orton goes back to Hardy and beats on him, placing him on top of the announce table. Producers and referees try to get Orton to back off. Orton hits the draping DDT from the announce table to the floor as the boos continue. Orton marches up the ramp as SmackDown goes off the air.
