As previously noted, WWE announced the release of Austin Aries on their website and social media earlier today. This news came as a shock to many in the wrestling community.
In an updated from our earlier report, the Wrestling Observer notes that Aries actually asked for his release from the company and was not fired or cut because of “budget reasons.” It’s unknown at this time exactly why he asked for his release but, according to PWTorch, Aries was unhappy being pigeonholed as a Cruiserweight, and saw much more potential for himself than the role he was given on 205 Live.
The report added that one source noted Aries had a bad attitude backstage in WWE, which might have made the decision for WWE to grant him his release easier. It’s likely Aries will end up back on the indie scene following his release, as he has spent time in Ring of Honor, and he could return to GFW as he also spent many years there.
Aries last appeared on WWE television in a non-wrestling role on the June 20th edition of 205 Live, during which he revealed he was not medically cleared to wrestle following nagging neck and leg injuries.
