Forging a strong career in the sport of boxing is a lot about promotional skills and likeability, as well as the talent and hard work needed in the ring. There are plenty of world-class fighters that excel athletically but lack the exposure and personality needed to make their ring outings even bigger.
However, there are enough of the best boxers that know exactly how to promote themselves well, whether it’s through controversial press conferences or simply being a likeable, down-to-earth star. Likewise in the WWE, wrestlers are reliant on becoming big-name stars as well as performing when the bright lights are on.
So, which current boxers could make it and hold a strong presence in the WWE? Here are five that would be in with a shot of creating mass hysteria in the wrestling world.
Floyd Mayweather Jr

The leading light in this scenario is undoubtedly Floyd Mayweather Jr, with the American having already delved into the wrestling world. Several years ago, ‘Money’ dipped his toe into the WWE when starring at WrestleMania and taking on the larger-than-life Big Show.
Despite being more than half the size of the gigantic heavyweight, Mayweather secured a famous win over him in front of millions. The legendary boxer would undoubtedly have a big WWE role waiting for him if he wanted to permanently swap sports in the near future.
Such a venture may have to wait a while longer yet, however, as the undefeated 40-year-old is currently embroiled in another cross-sports promotion, as he’s set to face off against UFC multi-weight champion Conor McGregor in the boxing ring next month. In the online boxing and online wrestling betting in England, Guts are offering promising 19/10 odds for Mayweather to prevail by decision over the Irishman on August 26th.
Gennady Golovkin
While Mayweather would definitely be a great heel in the WWE universe, Gennady Golovkin could be a superb babyface. Very much a likeable character within boxing, despite his evil-like demeanour in the ring, ‘GGG’ would surely be a star in the WWE.
His unnerving presence and mammoth size as a unified middleweight world champion would see fans take to him favourably. The intimidating Kazakstan knockout artist has previously outlined intentions of hanging up his gloves after fighting Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. So could a move to wrestling be on the cards for ‘the God of War’?
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez
Golovkin’s upcoming opponent Canelo is also a worldwide superstar in the sport of boxing. With the whole of Mexico tuning in every time he laces up his gloves, bringing that audience to the WWE would be a huge move. He is still early in his professional boxing career, so a switch to the world of wrestling may be further down the line.
But following in the footsteps of the likes of famous WWE superstar compatriots Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Tito Santana may be a lucrative switch for both parties later in life.
Anthony Joshua
It’s clear that the WWE fans love the big guys, especially those who are gunning for the world championship belt. Britain’s Anthony Joshua could well prove to be a huge hit in the WWE roster, with his charisma and charm adding to his devastating nature inside the squared circle.
He will soon be taking on the American audience in his boxing career, in a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko or a bout with Deontay Wilder. If his US outing proves successful and once he retires later on, could a move to the WWE beckon for the towering heavyweight champion of the world?
Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez
As well as fans admiring the big guys in the sport, they also love to back the small men. Those who are tiny in comparison to the heavyweights on show in the WWE, but still manage to gain success. Think of Rey Mysterio as the prime example here.
Four-weight boxing world champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez would certainly fit into that category and could provide another chapter of David v Goliath, a story which every sports fan adores.
