Revolution Pro Wrestling UK has announced a potentially huge match for their August 12th “Uprising” event at the historic York Hall in Bethnal Green, London. In what will certainly not be the first or last time two wrestlers attempt to turn a real life incident into a worked match for maximum gain, Will Ospreay will take his Twitter war with pro wrestling legend Big Van Vader into the squared circle for the very first time.
If you’re just tuning in to one of this year’s more unusual stories, the Ospreay/Vader program goes back to last month, when the “Mastodon” responded critically to a GIF of a highly acrobatic sequence performed by Ospreay and Ricochet (Lucha Underground’s Prince Puma) that took place during New Japan’s annual Best of Super Juniors tournament.
Despite Vader’s original criticism being focused on the one, very small segment of the match that ended up on his Twitter timeline, the internet quickly blew the story out of proportion. Things then grew exponentially when the big man continued to elaborate on his points – mainly that the two weren’t “telling a story” well enough – and Ospreay began openly mocking the incident, even using Vader’s signature moves in a few high profile matches.
Challenges have been thrown back and forth via Twitter for weeks, along with numerous insults (and one or two valid points, here and there), but now it looks like fans will actually get to see what they’ve been waiting for: Vader and Ospreay will collide for Rev Pro UK on August 12th. The match will be made available online on-demand at a later date over at RevolutionProWrestling.com.
