WWE Smackdown Results – May 23, 2017

WWE Smackdown Opener:

We start off with a look back at Sunday’s Backlash Pay Per View.

– We’re live from Toledo, Ohio with Tom Phillips, JBL and Byron Saxton. They start talking when we hear a bunch of police sirens in the background. The camera cuts outside and there’s a police escort making its way to the parking lot. They stop and The Singh Brothers hop out of a car. They place a carpet down and new WWE Champion Jinder Mahal steps out of a car. He takes a look around and gets ready for his Punjabi Celebration.

– We go back to the ring and out comes SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon.

The briefcase is above the ring so Shane may be talking about the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

Shane reminds everyone about history being made on Sunday night with Jinder Mahal winning the WWE Title. Shane says in four weeks, at Money in the Bank, Randy Orton will exercise his rematch clause. In his home town of St. Louis, Randy will try to get his title back. Shane says the Money in the Bank Match will also take place. One superstar will climb the ladder to capture the Money in the Bank briefcase. There is a contract for a WWE Title match whenever they want

Shane introduces the participants in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

AJ Styles comes out. He is followed by Baron Corbin. Out next is Sami Zayn. Dolph Ziggler is the fourth man to come out.

Kevin Owens makes his way to the stage and he has a mic.

Shane stops Kevin’s music and he tells Kevin that he is not in the Money in the Bank match. Shane brings out the fifth man and it is Shinsuke Nakamura.

Owens throws a fit and can’t believe these 5 are in the match. He understands why some of these guys are in the match as Sami and Nakamura won at Backlash. Owens says he also won at Backlash. The guy he beat is in the match but he’s not. Owens doesn’t get that and says it must come down to favoritism. He says SmackDown is the land of opportunity but Shane dictates who gets those opportunities. Owens wonders if it”s something else. He thinks Shane is a little upset because Owens did what he couldn’t do at WrestleMania 33 – defeat AJ. Shane ends up agreeing and putting Owens in the match as the 6th participant.

Corbin tells Owens to shut up and stop talking. Corbin says Owens got himself into the match but it won’t turn out good for him. Corbin knocks the others and tells Shane he should just lower the briefcase down and give it to Corbin now. AJ shuts Corbin up and reminds him that this is the house AJ Styles built. AJ knocks Owens and calls him WWE’s version of Eric Cartman. Fans chant Cartman now. AJ doesn’t care who it is, he plans on getting that case and getting his title back. Sami throws his two cents in but Corbin interrupts and says his win at Backlash was a fluke. They argue and Owens tells them to shut up. Ziggler interrupts and says he’s the only one to actually cash in and win, and he will do it again. Nakamura takes the mic and fans chant his name. Nakamura introduces himself, for those who still don’t know him. Nakamura says we can call him Mr. Money In the Bank for now. Shane announces Corbin vs. Sami in a Backlash rematch for tonight. He makes the main event as well – Ziggler and Owens vs. Styles and Nakamura. Shane’s music hits as everyone faces off.

– We see Becky, Charlotte and Naomi walking to the ring. We go to commercial.

Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. Carmella and Natalya

Back from the break and out first comes Charlotte Flair for this tag team match. Becky Lynch is out next as Greg Hamilton does the introduction. SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi is with her. Carmella and Natalya wait in the ring. James Ellsworth is at ringside with Tamina Snuka.

Carmella and Becky start things off and Carmella with a side head lock but Becky with a take down. Becky floats over and takes Carmella down with a side head lock and gets a near fall. Carmella with a side head lock. Carmella with a shoulder tackle and she blocks a hip toss. Becky blocks a hip toss and gets a near fall with a back slide. Carmella misses a clothesline and Becky goes for an O’Connor Roll but Becky turns it into a sunset flip. Charlotte drop kicks Natalya to the floor as we go to split screen for the commercial break.

Becky and Charlotte are in the ring while Carmella, Natalya, Tamina, and James stand around. Carmella gets close to the apron so Becky connects with a baseball slide and sends her back into the ring. Carmella sends Becky into the turnbuckle and then she moonwalks and hits a Bronco Buster. Carmella gets a near fall. Carmella with a forearm to the back and she tags in Natalya. They send Becky to the mat and Natalya with a suplex for a near fall. Natalya with a reverse chin lock and she taunts Charlotte. Becky with an arm drag and Becky is stopped from making the tag.

Carmella tags back in and she kicks Becky. Natalya tags back in and she kicks Becky. Natalya pulls Becky out of the corner and gets a near fall. Natalya with a reverse chin lock. Becky with elbows and we are back to the full screen with Natalya knocking Charlotte off the apron. Becky is double teamed by Carmella and Natalya. Becky kicks Natalya away and Becky goes through the legs to try to make the tag but Natalya stops her. Becky kicks Natalya away and Charlotte tags in. Charlotte with chops to Natalya.

Charlotte with an elbow and a neck breaker followed by a boot to the chest and she gets a near fall. Charlotte goes to the turnbuckles for a moonsault but Tamina gets on the apron to stop Charlotte. Naomi stops Tamina while Natalya hits a German suplex. Becky is tagged in and she hits a missile drop kick. Carmella tags in and kicks Becky. Carmella with a forearm and she slaps Becky. Becky goes for DisArmHer but Ellsworth gets on the apron. Naomi kicks Ellsworth off the apron and Becky applies DisArmHer and Carmella taps out.

Winners: Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch

Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin

Back from the break and both Superstars are out. The match barely gets underway when Sami rolls Corbin up for the quick win out of nowhere.

Winner: Sami Zayn

– After the bell, Sami jumps up and starts celebrating but Corbin nails him from behind. Corbin unloads and sends Sami to the floor. Corbin sends Sami into the timekeeper’s area and grabs a steel chair. Corbin nails Sami with the chair and keeps up the attack, fighting over into an area by the crowd. Corbin scoops Sami up and drops his neck over the railing. Corbin mushes Sami’s face into the ringside barrier and unloads on him with punches. Corbin marches off to the back as fans boo. Officials check on Sami and a stretcher is brought out.

– We are back with a Moments Ago Moment of Baron Corbin taking out the frustration that he lost in less than a minute to Sami Zayn by attacking zayn. We see Zayn being taken out on a stretcher.

Backstage:

Shinsuke Nakamura is in the locker room and AJ Styles enters and welcomes Nakamura to Smackdown. They go back to Japan and he assumes they earned each other’s respect. Tonight, for the first time, AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura are a tag team. AJ says he learned from Nakamura in Japan, but Shinsuke should follow him because this is the House that AJ Built. Nakamura says they are a team tonight but at Money in the Bank, he will take the briefcase and turn AJ’s house into his playground.

The Fashion Files:

It is time for the Fashion Files, the Final File. They are in Toledo (in the same police station as last week). Shane wants to know what is going on. Tyler and Fandango come in and ask the Commissioner if they want to see him. They turn in their badges after losing on Sunday. Shane tells them that they are not real cops. Fandango says that if you start saying that, they are right. Tyler asks if they want their guns too and they give them to Shane. They give all of their fashion attire and they start to take off their uniforms. Shane tells them they belong. Shane tells Tyler that he will face Jey Uso while Fandango will face Jimmy Uso. Tyler and Fandango realize they are back on the case and they take their stuff.

– The ring is prepared for Jinder Mahal’s celebration as we go to commercial.

In the Arena:

Back from the break and several Indian dancers come out to kick off the Punjabi Celebration. The Singh Brothers appear next and walk down a red carpet in between the dancers. They stop at ringside. New WWE Champion Jinder Mahal is out next as his music hits. Jinder stops and greets The Singh Brothers before entering the ring with them. The dancers are dancing around the ring now.

Jinder raises the title in the middle of the ring as the music stops. Fans boo. Jinder goes on about how people in his home country are cheering for him. People boo him here because of how he talks and how he looks but he proved everyone wrong with the win at Backlash. Jinder says Randy Orton is just like everyone else, he’s on the wrong path but Jinder is on the rise. Jinder goes on and says the people can’t ruin his celebration, they can’t hijack The Maharaja’s crowning. Jinder says this isn’t about the fans, it’s about him celebrating his accomplishments, celebrating his people, celebrating the Punjab and celebrating India. Jinder tells everyone to keep quiet so he can speak to his people in Punjabi. The segment ends as pyro goes off above the ring and Jinder’s music hits again. Jinder poses with the title as the dancers make their way to the back.

– Back from the break and we get a new vignette for Lana’s debut, coming soon.

Jey Uso vs. Tyler Breeze

Back from the break and out comes SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos. Tyler Breeze is out next with Fandango.

The bell rings and Uso doesn’t look interested. He takes a mic and says they already beat these two chumps at Backlash. Uso goes after Fandango, who shot him with a water gun, but Breeze takes advantage and rolls Uso up for the quick win.

Winner: Tyler Breeze

After the bell, Jimmy Uso wants his match.

Jimmy Uso vs. Fandango

The bell rings and Uso goes to work on Fandango, whipping him hard into the turnbuckle. Breeze gets chased around the ring, distracting both Usos. He decks Jey as Fandango rolls up Jimmy off the distraction for another easy win.

Winner: Fandango

After the match, Breezango takes the mic and wants a rematch for the titles. They taunt The Usos and The Usos call for the match right now. A referee goes to the timekeeper’s area and puts on a headset to communicate with the back. The match is official.

SmackDown Tag Team Title Match: Breezango vs. The Usos

The referee raises the titles as both teams get ready to go. Back to commercial.

Jey and Tyler start things off and Jey hits Tyler and slams him. Jimmy tags in and he punches Tyler while Jey hits a shoulder in the corner. Jimmy with an uppercut. Jimmy with a head butt and he tags in Jey. Jimmy with a back breaker and Jey comes off with a forearm to the throat. Jey with a reverse chin lock and front face lock. Jimmy tags in and hits a thrust kick while Jey holds Tyler. Jimmy punches Tyler and applies a reverse chin lock. Jimmy sends Breeze to the mat by the hair. Tyler kicks Jimmy to the floor and Tyler tries to make the tag and he succeeds.

Jey tags in and Fandango punches Jey and hits a clothesline. Jey with a punch and Fandango with a jumping spin kick. Fandango with a tornado DDT for a near fall. Jey sends Fandango shoulder first into the ring post and then Jimmy and Jey with a double super kick to Tyler and then Fandango. Jimmy goes up top for the frog splash but Fandango gets his knees up and he gets a near fall with an inside cradle.

Fandango goes up top and he kicks Jey off the apron. Jimmy with a punch and Jey tags in while Fandango pushes Jimmy off. Fandango with leg drop from the turnbuckles but Jey hits a frog splash for the the three count.

Winners: Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso

After the match, The Usos stand tall as we go to replays. Breeze and Fandango are shown recovering on the floor.

– Still to come, AJ and Nakamura vs. Owens and Ziggler. Back to commercial.

Backstage:

We are back and Natalya interrupts Shane while he was on the phone. Natalya says Shane told her that she could ask for her title match. Natalya won on Sunday. Carmella and James enter and Carmella says she won twice. Becky enters and reminds everyone she was the first Smackdown Women’s Champion. Tamina enters and she says everyone had a chance and everyone failed.

James says that Tamina was too busy giving him the goo goo eyes to get a title match. Charlotte enters and she says she was about to win the title until Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina interfered. Shane announces a Fatal Five Way Elimination Match and the winner will face Naomi at Money in the Bank for the title.

Backstage:

Brian Kendrick says that Akira Tozawa has been disrespecting him for months. Tonight, he will finally learn because they will have a match where anything goes and there are no rules.

AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler and Kevin Owens

Styles and Ziggler start things off and they lock up. Styles with a side head lock and Ziggler with a top wrist lock. Styles returns to the side head lock and AJ holds on when Ziggler tries to send him off the ropes. Ziggler with a side head lock. Styles tries for the Phenomenal drop kick but Ziggler holds on to the ropes. Ziggler misses a drop kick but Styles hits a drop kick.

Nakamura tags in and so does Owens. Owens calls Styles a loser on the apron and he says he is the new Face of America. Nakamura with a forearm and knees to Owens. Owens rolls to the floor and we go to commercial.

We are back and Nakamura leans on Owens for a clean break and Owens pushes him away. Nakamura with a snap mare and a leaping knee drop. Nakamura with boots in the corner. Owens drops Nakamura on the top rope and then Owens sends Nakamura to the mat. Owens with boots to Nakamura and he punches and kicks Nakamura. Owens with elbows to the arm and Ziggler tags in. Ziggler kicks Nakamura and runs his eyes across the top rope. Ziggler with chops but Nakamura with forearms. Ziggler with a kick to the knee and he hits a neck breaker and he gets a near fall.

Ziggler with a reverse chin lock. Nakamura with forearms but Ziggler stops Nakamura and tags in Owens who stomps on Nakamura. Owens with punches and he chokes Nakamura in the corner. Owens chops Nakamura and snap mares Nakamura and kicks him in the back. Owens with a reverse chin lock. Owens with a back elbow and he bows before kicking Nakamura. Ziggler tags in and he punches Nakamura. Nakamura with forearms to Ziggler and Owens. Nakamura with forearms to Ziggler but Ziggler stops Nakamura from making the tag. Owens tags in and he knocks Styles off the apron. Owens with a clothesline into the corner followed by a cannonball for a near fall.

Owens punches Nakamura and we go to commercial.

We are back and Nakamura gets a near fall with a rollup. Ziggler with a drop kick for a near fall. Owens tags in and he kicks Nakamura. Owens gets a near fall and then he runs his forearm across the face. Owens tags in Ziggler and tells him to finish off Nakamura. Nakamura with punches but Ziggler kicks Nakamura in the knee. Ziggler charges into the corner and misses. Ziggler hits the ring post shoulder first. Styles tags in and Styles with clotheslines and punches followed by a clothesline. Styles with a sliding forearm for a near fall. Styles with a forearm to knock Owens off the apron. Styles with an Ushigoroshi for a near fall.

Owens distracts Styles to stop the Styles Clash and ZIggler wtih a hot shot and he sends Styles to the floor. Owens tags in and he hits a back senton on the floor. Owens backs Styles into the apron and Owens with a running kick to Styles’ back to knock him off the apron. Owens sends Styles back into the ring and he applies a reverse chin lock. Styles with punches to Owens followed by a forearm. Owens with a back body drop and he gets a near fall. Owens with forearms to Styles followed by a boot to the midsection. Ziggler tags in and he head butts Styles and then he puts Styles on the turnbuckles.

Styles punches Ziggler and knocks him off the turnbuckles but Ziggler with a forearm. Ziggler sets for a superplex but Styles slides under and Ziggler grabs AJ by the hair to stop the tag. Styles with a wheelbarrow gutbuster and both men are down. Styles kicks Ziggler to get to his corner and Nakamura tags in. Owens tags in too. Nakamura with forearms and kicks to Owens. Nakamura with an Irish whip and a running knee into the corner. Nakamura puts Owens on the turnbuckles and then he rolls back and hits a running knee to the midsection for a near fall.

Nakamura goes for the reverse Exploder but Owens escapes. Owens avoids an enzuigiri but Nakamura hits the second attempt. Ziggler breaks up the cover and misses a Fameasser. Nakamura with a reverse Exploder to Ziggler. Owens with a forearm to Nakamura. Styles with a Pele kick to Owens. Ziggler with a super kick to stop Styles’ attempt at the Styles Clash. Nakamura with a drop kick to Ziggler. Nakamura hits Kinshasa on Owens for the three count.

Winners: Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles

After the match, Nakamura’s music hits as he stands tall. AJ and Nakamura have their arms raised in the middle of the ring as we go to replays. Nakamura continues the celebration as AJ looks on, standing on the second turnbuckle. SmackDown goes off the air with AJ and Nakamura standing in the middle of the ring facing off as we see the Money In the Bank briefcase hanging high.
